While talking to a friend, she mentioned that the Japanese will sometimes day they “slept like mud” after a particularity hard sleep. That got me thinking about other “mud” idioms that the Japanese have. I don’t know if you’ll be happy that I found this one :P

Doro o haku – 泥を吐く (どろをはく)
Meaning – To vomit mud

At first glance “to vomit mud” sounds pretty gross. And I guess I can’t really put a good spin on it…so I guess I won’t try. The Japanese idiom “to vomit mud” means to confess to a crime. So I guess if you’re going to prison, you may as well vomit a little mud on your way.

Here’s an example sentence from the book 2001 Japanese and English Idioms:

Yohisha wa, taiho sareru to sugu ni doro o hakimashita.

容疑者は、逮捕されるとすぐに泥を吐きました。

The suspect vomited mud to the crime right after his arrest.

So there you go. I can’t guarantee what will happen if you try and use this idiom…but maybe you’ll get a few chuckles from the police officers before they drag you away :D
