Cute Things from Japan – Konapun

Wow! Just when you think you have found the cutest things you can in Japan, there is more!

Remember my minor obsession with Re-ment? Well now I have discovered Konapun!!!! How do they come up with this stuff? It is amazing

What is Konapun?

Ok, so Konapun allows you to cook with your miniature items. Yes cook! It’s a powder that you mix with water and then allows you to create all kinds of lovely foods!

Sadly, it is not edible. Although that is ok, because it would probably make my “head esplode” if it did! It is made of something called sodium alginate.

Also it is not actually cooking either, which is probably another good thing – “Help! Help! My mini stove is on fire and I broke the knob!!” Although I guess if it was, dumping it in a glass of water is pretty basic.

So, apparently it comes in various colours and depending on the amount of water you add, you can vary the texture.

And it can rot. I wonder what moldy konapun looks like – a whole new avenue of realistic food creation!=)

AND get this: they can make it look like it is cooking. They have a mixture made of the same stuff apparently, but then it bubbles and the food rises to the top as if it has been cooked! Genius!

And hey if you like the idea of Okonmiyaki but aren’t sure you are ready to eat it – you can still make it!

Oh dear! Tiny ice cream scoop!Tiny ice cream scoop! *squeal*

There are more videos to check out, and I’m not even going to mention the soft ice cream machine.

Actually, there are one or two of these sets that you can eat. One is pizza and dumplings and the other is sushi. Don’t know If I would eat it personally, but it is pretty cool to see!

I´m searching for konapun fan meetings and gatherings. Is there a konapun fan community in Japan?

  10. sasksak  on January 4th, 2012

Yes, I believe konapun is still available in Japan, although I did have trouble finding it. I’m guessing toy stores are your best bet, or perhaps AEON or Daiei stores. However, if anyone out there can give better suggestions that would be really great!

sinoogni, I am sorry I can’t help you with your question. Maybe someone else reading the site will be able to answer it though.

Where can I buy them in Ontario?

  13. sasksak  on February 5th, 2012

    Hi Diana,
I’m thinking your best chance of finding some konapun would be to buy online. If you do find a seller in Ontario though, please let us know!
