Japan Roundup

Mount Fuji with sakura

We’re back with another Japan Rundown from across the net.

In this edition we’ll look at how the Sakura season is progressing, some beautiful tilt-shift photos from Japan and a strange new trend in Japan of fine dining in prison.

Sakura Season

The coming of the new year starts one of the most beautiful transformations of Japan – the beginning of the cherry blossom season. The season typically kicks off mid January and makes its way slowly north. Since the blooms only last a few days, you need to be ready to move to your favorite viewing spots before you miss it.

Many Japanese newspapers and news programs will run special sakura updates while the season is on. Much like a weather report, the Japanese Meteorological Agency and the public track the sakura zensen (cherry-blossom front) and are kept up to date on how the season is progressing and where the blooms are happening.

The transience of the blossoms, the extreme beauty and quick death, has often been associated with mortality;[5] for this reason, cherry blossoms are richly symbolic, and have been utilized often in Japanese art, manga, anime, and film, as well as at musical performances for ambient effect. – Wikipedia

If you’re planning on visiting Japan during the next 30 days, you’ll want to make sure to study this cherry blossom map or the 2010 season forecast.

Tilt-shift Japan

Tilt-shift Japan train

Tilt-shift is form of photography editing that makes a regular photo appear miniaturized. NihongoUp recently posted a nice rundown of their top 10 tilt-shift photos from Japan.

Here are a few more I found from around the net:

Tilt-shift Yokohama

Prison Eats

And finally, a little taste of the bizarre with Japan’s latest trend of eating at restaurants styled like prisons. I must say, I think some of the food names got lost in translation.
